My Yoga Journey

Adrianna Naomi is a yoga teacher based in Brooklyn, New York, USA. In this interview, she shares her yoga journey and motivation for practicing yoga.
What does yoga mean to you?
Yoga is a practice that provides us with tools to free ourselves from preconditioned patterns that lead to anguish and suffering. It invites us to honor our human experience and to face our shortcomings with compassion and acceptance. Through yoga, we integrate all aspects of our mind, body, and spirit to lead well-balanced lives in the support of ourselves, so that we can best serve and support others.
When did you first start practicing yoga and why?I had taken a handful of yoga classes in my teenage years and during college. It wasn't until I moved to New York City that I developed a steady practice. I missed feeling 'at home.' The city felt cold and crowded most of the time, and on my mat, I felt that I belonged there, with myself. Whether it was an invigorating vinyasa class or a profoundly spiritual kundalini practice, the time I spent on my mat allowed me to tune inwards and find peace within my perceived turmoil.

How has yoga impacted your life?Yoga has impacted my life in numerous ways. It has gifted me with a community of like-minded individuals, from all walks of life, which now I get to connect with virtually during my online yoga classes. The physical posture practice has given me the space to explore what my body is capable of and work with the nuances surrounding the more subtle energetic aspects of myself. Through mindfulness, I've found healthier ways to cope with stress and anxiety. Overall, the practice has made me a more understanding, empathetic, and patient human.

Why should someone practice yoga?
There are so many reasons why someone should practice yoga! The practice is a fascinating journey in self-discovery. What humans unlock through yoga is different for everyone but ends up being exactly what that person needs, as long as they are open to receiving.
What are your favourite asanas and why?
Currently, I'm exploring arm balances from the seat of a student and a teacher. During May, I've created an arm balance month-long journey to invite my students in this exploratory endeavor. I am fascinated by power vinyasa and how one can create strength through a vigorous sequence.
I've been rediscovering Bakasana (Crow Pose), Parsva Bakasana (Side Crow), and their variations.
Eka Pada Koundinyasana II (Hurdler Pose) and its transition to Ganda Bherundasana (Chin Stand), Astavakrasana (Eight-Angle Pose), and Tittibhasana (Firefly).
Through all these arm balances, I get to target the muscle activations necessary to support my ongoing Adho Mukha Vrksasana (Handstand) practice.

Is there anything else you would like to add?
I am currently teaching several Power Vinyasa classes a week and a Restorative class at the end of the week. My weekly online group class schedule can be found in the link in my Instagram bio. I hope to have my website finished and launching soon!
Adrianna's beautiful story reminds us that yoga is indeed a journey of self-discovery. Whether you find yourself in a foreign land physically or unfamiliar territory emotionally, yoga is a way to come back to yourself or, better yet, discover yourself anew. What yoga unlocks for you, as Adrianna explains, is different for each individual. Enjoy the journey. Namaste!
