What are wellness resorts?
At Ayurooms, we define "wellness resorts" as having four critical features:
There are many properties that claim to be "wellness resorts" just because they exist in a pretty location and offer serenity and quietude. However, these factors alone do not constitute a wellness resort. Lovely architecture, stunning landscaping and environments, cleanliness and good housekeeping, and overall ambience are all important considerations in selecting a wellness resort, but not the defining features of a wellness resort. There is a subtle distinction being made here.
Wellness results from the deliberate planning and design of a daily program that initiates a process that leads to physical and mental well-being. This program should ideally be designed by an expert in Ayurveda, naturopathy, and/or other forms of traditional medicine and holistic health. The program should aim to reduce stress, improve digestion, relieve pain or discomfort, and address any particular health goal or ailment that the individual or couple may require.
It is not enough simply to offer a vegan diet or a gluten-free diet or keto or a vegetarian diet. Yes, dietary preferences are important and worthy of consideration. But a proper wellness resort offers an objective-driven diet: consciously and carefully selected foods, chosen for their nutritional value and designed to achieve the couple's wellness goals and health needs.
Spa treatments are super important. And by "spa treatments", we really mean Ayurvedic treatments, informed and inspired by the world's oldest living system of holistic health: Ayurveda. The provision of daily Ayurvedic treatments is an essential component of a wellness resort and the very reason why couples should go to a wellness resort together. Ayurveda can enhance the quality of a relationship and improve the couple's health, as a unit and individually.
Finally, no wellness resort is complete unless a daily yoga practice is offered and indeed strongly encouraged. Ayurvedic treatment is intended for physical health, while yoga and meditation are intended for spiritual and mental health. Ayurveda and yoga work hand-in-hand to improve, restore and sustain health. And if the pandemic has taught us anything, it is this: health is not just physical; it is equally mental.
In Ayurvedic tradition and thought, we learn that the mind affects the body, and the body affects the mind. It is a symbiotic relationship. Ayurveda does not take the view that health problems are purely psychosomatic, that is, originating in the mind and then manifesting in the body. Rather, a health issue could arise in the body before it starts to mess with the mind, and vice versa.
So if you do go to a wellness resort, take advantage of both Ayurveda and yoga. The two work together.

How to choose a wellness resort for couples?
Firstly, it is important to know what is included in a holistic wellness package. At a bare minimum, your package should include:
At Ayurooms, we also include airport transfers and at least one excursion or curated experience. If a hotel or resort does not offer all of the above, it cannot really be considered a "wellness resort".
Treatments: The next thing to consider is the quality of treatments. The quality Ayurvedic treatments and/or other spa therapies available at the resort should be among your top criteria. It makes all the difference in the world. However, it is very difficult to judge the quality of treatments based on online reviews or even a resort's website. Often times, resorts with the worst websites have the best treatments, and the opposite is also true. Reviews are also unreliable as they are usually written by non-experts. Moreover, what worked for one person may not work for you. Consult an expert.
Multi-therapist approach: High quality treatments are typically multi-therapist. This means that there are a minimum of four hands (two therapists) delivering your massage or other treatment. The very best resorts involve three or more therapists in the treatment process. While many resorts follow the single-therapist model of delivering Ayurvedic treatment, it's usually not as thorough and fulfilling as multi-therapist treatments.
Meals: As mentioned earlier, a proper wellness resort offers a personalized diet to each and every client, without imposition. The very best wellness resorts have a dedicated wellness menu that provides a wide range of meal options according to your dosha type or body constitution. It is not a hard-and-fast requirement that wellness resorts should be pure vegetarian or satvik. Rather, there should be variety without dogma. The presence of meat or chicken or seafood at a resort does not necessarily mean that a resort is not serious about wellness.
In the final analysis, what is most important is that each client be given a diet with clear "dos and donts"; a diet that helps him or her achieve a desired result or health outcome and, ultimately, positively reshapes his or her her food habits going forward.

Luxury Wellness Resorts for couples
Our favourite wellness resort for couples is Niraamaya Retreats, mainly due to the blissful location and the quality of hospitality. We also like Carnoustie and Atmatan (shown below). As a reminder, luxury wellness resorts for couples typically start at INR 20,000 or USD $275 per day, per person.
Premium Wellness Resorts for couples
Our favourite premium wellness resort for couples is Manaltheeram. The proximity to the beach, the tropical weather, the magnificent food, the kind and accommodating doctors, the refreshing pool, the tantalizing vegetarian food, and the highly accessible yoga and meditation classes make Manaltheeram a wonderful place to visit and an unforgettable experience. The sister property of Manaltheeram, Somatheeram Ayurveda Village, is also among our favourite destinations.
Nature lovers should consider The Cardamom Club by Niraamaya Retreats, although getting there requires enormous patience given the long drive from the nearest international airport (Cochin).

Highly Affordable Wellness Resorts for couples
While we have shared budget-friendly options below, it is important to remember that these resorts are not honeymoon destinations or romantic getaways. These are healing places for people who wish to experience hardcore Ayurveda, undergo panchakarma, follow a regimental diet, and subsist in basic accommodations. Our favourite value resort for couple is Nagath Ayurveda.
