My Yoga Journey
with Beatrice Leone
Beatrice Leone is a yoga teacher and clinical massage therapist in Worthing, United Kingdom. In this interview, she shares her yoga journey and motivation for practicing yoga.
Yoga is a way of life... much more than a set of postures... it is a way to go within and go home to myself. It means attending not only to my physical, but also my emotional wellbeing. Yoga helped me when nothing else could help. It keeps me grounded and in the present moment.

What does yoga mean to you?To me, yoga is a way of life. It is much more than a set of postures or exercises; it is a way to go within and go home to myself. It means attending not only to my physical, but also my emotional wellbeing. Yoga helped me when nothing else could help. It keeps me grounded and in the present moment, something that I never managed to do before starting this beautiful practice.
When did you first start practicing yoga and why?I started practicing yoga 10 years ago on the recommendation of my doctor back in Italy. He suggested that it would help to improve my anxiety and chronic pain. I had tried yoga a couple of years before this time, when I was 16 years old, but for some reason it did not resonate with me. However, this time something clicked: the teacher, the practice, something started to resonate with me and I have never stopped since.

Were you ever resistant to learn yoga?
I was never resistant to yoga really. The first time I tried it, I just did not find the right teacher. In all honesty, I was always fascinated by the practice and oriental philosophies, in general. Once I found the right teacher, everything aligned and the practice became part of my life.
How has yoga impacted your life?It has greatly reduced my chronic pain and lessened my anxiety. Made me a lot more present, a better student and a better listener, even a better observer. It gave me the tools to live a more conscious life and be of service for others.
Why should someone practice yoga? Why shouldn't they? Yoga has such an array of benefits. I have seen the benefits not only on myself, but also, on people I have met through my teachings: people who suffer from chronic conditions such as fibromyalgia, arthritis, autoimmune conditions, and chronic pain. But the benefits are not just physical, emotionally it can be of great support through anxiety, stress and even depression. With the right practice, everyone can benefit from yoga.

What are your favourite asanas and why?Such a tough questions!
I love gentle inversions, such as Uttanasana or Legs up the Wall, which I believe can be of incredible benefit to calm our nervous system and slow down. In this sense, any yin posture I really love, especially Swan (also known as Pigeon or Kapotasana in a yang practice). In an active practice, I absolutely love playing with arm balances! Is there anything else you would like to add?On top of being a yoga teacher, I am also a Clinical Massage Therapist, helping people in chronic pain improve their quality of life, always in combination with some yoga teachings. I also work with athletes pre and post event. I treat people with a variety of techniques, including myofascial release, trigger point therapy, stretching and strengthening along side some Eastern techniques such as acupressure. It is a beautifully holistic way to help people feel better!
