Jessica Savoie

Yoga Teacher | Registered Nurse

My Yoga Journey
with Jessica Savoie

Published 9 May 2020
Jessica Savoie is a yoga teacher and ICU registered nurse in Sydney, Australia. In this interview, she shares her yoga journey and motivation for practicing yoga.

What does yoga mean to you?

Yoga means to find unity with the body, breath and mind. It is to find peace within yourself through movement and meditation. Yoga is not only asana (yoga poses) but a way of life.

When did you first start practicing yoga and why?

I first started practicing yoga in 2012 because I loved exercises and it was something I had never tried or knew anyone who was trying it -- so I was curious. I luckily went to an amazing studio with great teachers and fell in love after my first class. I never felt so connected to my body and in tune with my breath during movement. This was truly everything in one.

Were you ever resistant to learn yoga?

No, because I'm open to almost any exercise.

How has yoga impacted your life?

Yoga has impacted my life in so many ways. It has allowed me to explore my inner self — my thoughts and feelings and my energy body. It's brought me more strength and flexibility, of course; but most of all, strength mentally. It helps me become more self-aware and into the present moment.

Why should someone practice yoga?

1. Mental strength and clarity
2. To be more in the present moment
3. To feel connected with one's body
4. To gain strength, flexibility and peace

What are your favourite asanas and why?

Some of my favorite asanas are puppy pose and camel (love to open the chest), lizard, scandasana (side lunge pose), malasana (yoga squat or garland pose) and wide leg forward fold (feels good to open the hips and release some emotions).
Jessica Savoie's yoga journey reminds us that yoga typically impacts a person's life in more ways than one. Mental strength and clarity, greater awareness of the present moment, and a stronger connection to one's body are strong reasons to practice yoga, beyond the obvious physical benefits of strength and flexibility. Namaste!
