My Yoga Journey
with Sabin Lakhani

Published 12 May 2020
Sabin Lakhani is a yoga teacher, nutrition coach, and owner of  Spectrum Watches in Dubai. In this interview, she shares her yoga journey and motivation for practicing yoga.

What does yoga mean to you?

We all move, nourish, and heal in different ways. Yoga brings mindfulness to it. It's a form of therapy. When you move with your breath and with intent, your entire being listens and starts aligning.

When did you first start practicing yoga and why?

My practice started with meditation with my grandma when I was 8ish. I started moving through asanas when I was around 19. I haven't stopped since.

Were you ever resistant to learn yoga?

I lost my practice when I was going through a severe depression. With no guide on why and what was happening to me, I lost all mindfulness that I had cultivated for years. One day, I decided to just get back on my mat even though I had zero motivation, just to stretch my spine. Cried but continued. Since then my mat and I have been inseparable.

How has yoga impacted your life?

Meditation is a gift that keeps on giving. If it wasn't for this gift from my grandma, I would have been mentally so lost. Asana practice and the philosophy of yoga have given me an insight into the meaning of life and provided so much stillness and beauty in my mind. It has also helped me heal my very weak digestive system and brought balance to my mind, which is prone to extreme emotions.

Why should someone practice yoga?

Yoga is one of the best forms of preventive medicine. If applied therapeutically, it has the capacity to start the healing process of many modern-day ailments. It is also the best supplemental and complimentary therapy for treating ALL noncommunicable diseases.

What are your favourite asanas and why?

Butterfly, Camel and Pigeon. All work on opening the hips and a deep connection with the root and heart chakras.
Sabin's yoga journey reminds us that yoga is always available to us, even in the toughest of times. It can bring us balance in times when our emotions are fluctuating and it can redress physical issues, such as weak digestion. Yoga is thus so much more than a fitness routine or an extracurricular workout! Namaste.
