Who should go to Athreya Ayurvedic Centre?
Athreya is most suitable for those on a strict budget and who are looking for serious Ayurvedic treatment for specific ailment. It is also suitable for those interested in hardcore Panchakarma, which may involve intensive therapies such as vamana (therapeutic vomiting), rakta moksha (blood purification through bloodletting), and virechana (purgation). Athreya is not a place where you can pick-and-choose your treatments. It is not a spa.
It is important to note that Athreya is not for everyone. If you desire a pool, beach, hotel-quality amenities, hot water around-the-clock, sightseeing, culinary splendour, and "gentle Ayurveda", then Athreya is not the place for you.

What we love about Athreya
- Duration of treatments is typically three hours per day, but can be shorter or longer depending on your condition.
- Pure Ayurvedic vegetarian food is served at Athreya.
- Yoga is offered twice a day (75 minutes per session).
- Athreya manufactures its proprietary Ayurvedic medicines and administers these to guests.
- There is a very peaceful vibe at Athreya.
- At Athreya, the Ayurvedic massage (abhyanga) is usually administered by two therapists (four hands), which is often more satisfying than a single therapist massage.
- Given the limited quantity and variety of food served, it is less tempting to overeat and very possible to lose a lot of weight at Athreya, if weight loss is your main goal.
What you should know about Athreya
- Patient education and informed consent are practiced at this resort. Guests are required to watch a video of each treatment prior to actually receiving it.
- Very intensive detox treatments are given to almost all guests. For instance, vamana (therapeutic vomiting).
- Food variety is very limited at this resort.
- Heavy rains occur from April to September.
- Mosquitoes can be problematic at this resort, especially during the Monsoon (June to September).
- Sightseeing and excursions are discouraged at Athreya.
- The nearest beach is 2 hours away.
- Rooms are very basic. No televisions, no kettles, no real amenities apart from air conditioning.
- Not all guests receive oil massages. Oil massages are only administered when the doctor deems you fit for it.
- The minimum stay at Athreya is 7 nights.
- There is no nightly entertainment at Athreya.
- Athreya's methods can be unconventional and more aggressive. For instance, vamana (therapeutic vomitting) and virechana (induced diarrhea) are often administered back to back (over two consecutive days).
